Weekend party - Singapore



Imperfeições de asfalto e imprecisões de perfil talvez sejam os maiores desafios na reprodução fiel das condições reais do circuito de Marina Bay, em Singapura. Enquanto na maioria das pistas atuais a busca é por uma suavidade tamanha na mudança de nível, para este caso a perspectiva é bem diferente.

Por isso eu e Paulo conversamos sobre qual a melhor forma de sugerir toda a gama de solavancos e sobressaltos da pista e resolvemos elaborar esse eficiente método.

Tudo o que precisamos descobrir, de antemão, é que é muito melhor simular saltos alterando de forma randômica o perfil transversal do traçado (track banking) e não o perfil longitudinal ao longo do eixo. Então esse é o passo-a-passo do processo:

1. No GP4 Builder, crie livremente alterações de banking por toda a pista;
2. Exporte um banco de dados da pista com valores de inclinação transversal (Real Bank Values);
3. Copie esses valores para uma planilha do Office Excel;
4. Gere gráficos de linha para trechos da pista, em nosso caso, do setor 151 ao 200. Os gráficos servirão para acompanhamento das alterações propostas no passo 5;
5. Altere manualmente e de maneira randômica os valores de banking. A princípio, pequenas mudanças até estar habituado;
6. Salve o resultado como texto sem tabulações (.txt) e importe diretamente no GP4 Builder.

Pena que não sei como criar um vídeo, mas acredite, o resultado é muito bom e balança pra dedéu.

PS: Seria ainda melhor se o Laurent criasse uma ferramente de edição de banking assim como hoje existe para alteração de altura.



Urban tarmac imperfections and imprecise heights remains as one of the major challenges on simulating singapore marina bay circuit. As for most of tracks we search for the Best tarmac level and smoother track profile, at singapore there would be a whole opposite approach.

That´s why I´ve been talking to Paulo about it, and we decided to create such a brand new “method” for bumping making.

All I have to discover is the fact that, in GP4 Builder, it´s way better to simulate bumping by randomic changes for track banking, and not track heights (Z values) as we first previewed. So, this was the step-by-step process:

1. At GP4 Builder, create track banking changes all along the circuit;
2. Export a track database text for Real Bank Values;
3. Copy these values into a Office Excel Sheet;
4. Generate Graphics for sector ranges (as we chosen, from 151 to 200). These graphics will help on visualize changing proposed on step 5;
5. Manually and randomic alterations on TBnk0151 to TBnk200 values. It does not need to be such great changes, but enough to simulate tarmac bumps;
6. Save sheet as a .txt file and import at GP4 Builder.

Pity I´m not able to release a video of these changes here, but be sure it´s fine and shaking all around.

PS: It would be even better if Laurent Lo2k would create a Bank Profiler quite similar as available Track Profiler. Only difference would be the fact there would be positive and negative values and a central axis.

Singapore propõe mudanças em prol de ultrapassagens

O circuito de Marina Bay passará por mudanças no traçado consagrado na última temporada de Fórmula 1.

Após discussões entre organizadores, equipes e FIA, foi divulgado que serão realizadas pequenas modificações nas curvas 1, 13 e 14 para forçar ultrapassagens entre carros, e mudanças significativas na entrada e saída do pitlane para aumentar a segurança dos pilotos. Também sofrerá melhorias o asfalto de trechos rápidos da pista, entre curvas 5 e 7.

Nós do F1 virtual resolvemos simular o que deve acontecer nesses exemplos acima, mas desde já reconhecemos que a mudança na curva 1 é absolutamente desnecessária.


Singapore in bid to boost overtaking

The Marina Bay circuit, which plays host to Formula 1’s night race in Singapore, will undergo layout changes in a bid to boost overtaking ahead of its second grand prix later this year.

The sport’s inaugural floodlit race was widely hailed as a big success last September, but organisers have wanted to improve the racing spectacle for 2009 and have now announced track alterations following discussions between themselves, the teams and FIA.

These are headlined by minor changes to turns one, 13 and 14 to try and give drivers a better opportunity to attempt a passing move.

In addition the controversial pit lane entry, which used the exact same piece of track as cars on a flying lap and saw Nick Heidfeld and Rubens Barrichello penalised for an incident there in 2008, and exit will be revised, while improvements to the bumpy track surface will be made between turns five and seven.

“While the circuit and the event exceeded expectations around the world, as with any brand new event, there are always things which we now know we can do better,” said Singapore’s technical and race operations director, Michael McDonough.

“Minor modifications are proposed on the track, at Turns one, seven and 14 in order to improve overtaking opportunities whilst the main changes will be to the pit entry and pit exit to provide added margins of safety for cars entering and leaving the pit lane.”

Organisers say changes to the first corner will involve moving the corner apex and reducing the corner radius in a bid to reduce entry speeds and give drivers more of an opportunity to try an out-braking move into the turn.

And after drivers took advantage of a concrete verge to take a wide line into the corner last year, kerbing will also be installed on the entry so to force drivers to take a narrower line.

Changes at turn 13 will see the previously tight left-handed hairpin, the turn immediately after the iconic Anderson Bridge, altered to increase cornering speeds so cars carry more speed down the next straight into the braking zone at turn 14.

In addition the geometry of turn 14 will be altered to give more overtaking chances under braking.
Meanwhile, the pit lane entry and exit changes will see a dedicated approach lane created, with the vast run-off areas around the final turn reduced, while the exit will be extended past the first turn so drivers now feed back onto the circuit off the racing line at turn two.

We, from F1 virtual, decided to simulates what would be those changes, but for now we feel sorry for turn 1 cracking. We guess it´s totally unnecessary.

The best you can is good enough (10x)


A primeira vez que vi o mapa conseguido pelo xav85 em suas pesquisas fiquei extasiado com a precisão do desenho. Não ´há dúvida de que esse projeto será o mais próximo da realidade possível. O Paulão também juntou bastantes dados pela transmissão da TV (rascunho inicial) que serão prontamente adicionados à versão final do dat.

Mais em breve, fiquem de olho.


The very first time I saw this map from xav85´s research, I was amazed... It´s so precise and unique, there´s no doubt we can afford this venue as close to reality as possible. Paulo has got some valuable data from TV broadcast (see sketches) and many details will be added for final dat.

Novo layout para Singapura


Seria melhor ainda se a gente pudesse ter a planta geral do circuito. Mas com os pedaços que disponibilizaram pelo site oficial (http://www.singaporegp.sg) já é possível recompor a totalidade da pista.
Agora passaremos ao GP4Builder pra construir o traçado em seus 5.067m.


It would be better if one could handle us official masterplan. But track pieces on website of Singapore F1 enabled us to build whole venue.
Now we shall stay on GP4Builder for 5.067m long dat file.

Singapura Layout - Cadê o definitivo?


Esse o principal problema de Singapura até o momento: não há (pelo menos eu não achei) nenhum mapa oficial do traçado definitivo, apenas ilustrações sem escala, sem uma boa referência para que possamos reproduzir o traçado dignamente.

O que mais se aproxima é esse mapa aqui, do escritório do Tilke, que conta com um layout antigo, mas com a direção dos carros correta. Permite-nos aproveitar uns 60% do traçado, mas ainda é pouco, considerando que a parte do pitlane e da singapore flyer (velha conhecida roda gigante) são inteiramente novas.


This is the main problem for Singapore so far: there ain´t any official report inclunding definitive track layout, wherever we search for... Only non-scaled illustrations and amateur sketches...

Main design is the one posted here from Tilke´s. That´s an old proposed layout, too tight, but from which we can base as reference 60% of track layout, pitlane straight and flyer curve non-considered, of course...
